Life On and Off an Acreage

In-sights into moving from an Acreage back to Town, plus a few things I find of interest.

Two things that horses are scared about:

1. Things that move
2. Things that don't move

Updates

The Bear that I found in Rotary Park
has been live trapped and relocated by Fish and Wildlife. Apparently, the apple tree was  cut down. A second bear was also trapped. There are still a female with two cubs hanging around. I am happy that I got the photos when I did.

I am now up to 16 apple pies and 16 apple crumbles that are sitting in the freezer waiting.
I am getting very tired of apples! There are still about 50 pounds on the last tree and I plan to pick them this evening and give them away!

Apple Pie, Crisps, and a Full Belly

Our apple trees are ready for doing something with. The apples are a little smaller than last year, but much more plentiful. Therefore I started working with the corer, peeler and put 72 cups of apples into 6 of these bad boys and 8 Crumbles.

5 pies and 8 crumbles made it to the freezer! One got sacrificed in the quality control exercise. It passed with flying colours.

This is God's gift to apple peelers. I don't know how I ever got along with out it. It peels and cores and slices with just a crank of a handle. Well worth the cost in time saved!

Now, I have half of one tree picked with another 2 1/2 to go! I think I will be giving apples away, after 6 more pies!

I Am So Done with Apples!

My three young apple trees  produced very well this year, and I am worn out baking! I have 7 of these pies in the freezer. One got sacrificed to see if it was edible.

I have also finished up with 8 apple crumbles and they are in the process of going into the Hotel Frigidaire. Well 7 are anyway. One got intercepted for testing purposes. It also passed. In the background are 5 jars of preserved applesauce. Yes, I have been busy!

More Crumbles!

This little apparatus made all the peeling and coring easy! Thank you, Lee Valley!

I guess the work is done for another year! Oh, wait, there are still two bags of cherries to either make pies, or muffins with, if I can figure out how to get the pits out. Life is not the pits, but cherries may be!

There is Nothing Like...

Growing your own apple trees. Every place we have lived, we have planted fruit trees, Kenora, Iroquois Falls, Fort William and Whitecourt (2X).

I have been watching them for a while and decided it was time for the harvest. Shake the tree, and down they come!

So far, I have seven of these dudes in the freezer. We had to sacrifice one to ensure they are edible. It was definitely edible! If I shake the tree one more time, I will have lots for desiccating. Dried apples are very good.

Oh yeah, there are two more trees besides this one.

It Never Ends!

Our garden crops have been fantastic this year! So far, six rhubarb pies, 4 rhubarb crumbles in the freezer and now starting on apple pies. There are 7 of these apple dudes in the freezer and one sacrificed to establish that they are edible. They are! And then some!

Now, what to do with the remaining sixty or so pounds of apples that are still on the trees?
Any suggestions?
