Life On and Off an Acreage

In-sights into moving from an Acreage back to Town, plus a few things I find of interest.

Two things that horses are scared about:

1. Things that move
2. Things that don't move

This and That.. More That

After working in the garden most of the day, digging and planting potatoes, onions, lettuce, spinach, I decided to do a bit of a walk about in the lower pasture.

This anthill was not there last year.

 The bumble bees were busy
This little butterfly plus a whole bunch more just like him were flitting around.
A few Tiger Swallowtails were flying around.
Then there were these guys, zillions of them all over the place. It must be the year of the worm.

More of the horrible little critters! I don't know what eats them. The only time I saw anything chewing on them was a hunter spider. (See last year's blog)

There are a few things to do in the main garden, but they can wait for another day.

Bugs and Crops

I found more of these caterpillars today. It's hard to tell which end is which, until you realize that part of the leaf is missing under the head. They are feeding on the Honey berry bushes. I will leave them be, unless they decide apple leaves are better.

The hail storm missed us the other night and the apple crop is safe. I wish that I had recorded what type of apple trees these were, but I didn't. So far they are safe and starting to turn red.
Now, does anybody out in blog land have a recipe for apple sauce that doesn't use sugar? I was thinking of trying Stevia, but don't know if it would work.

Fall is coming!..Fast

The Spotted Tussock Moth caterpillar is now showing up, a sure sign that summer is winding down.

Spotted Tussock Moth

The raspberry bushes are starting to turn colour, and the berry crop is almost finished.

The young deer are still in velvet, but the larger bucks are coming out of it. This little guy has decided to sleep near the salt lick and water trough.
It appears that more damage was done in the county as a result of the wind storm than first thought. Winds were clocked at 100 km/ hour at the airport (official) and total damage is estimated at 3 to 4 million bucks. The Lion's campground will be closed until at least Labour Day and 600 trees have to be cleaned up to the tune of $70,000 dollars. We got off lucky, with no on property damage.
