Life On and Off an Acreage

In-sights into moving from an Acreage back to Town, plus a few things I find of interest.

Two things that horses are scared about:

1. Things that move
2. Things that don't move

Old enough to be eccentric, but not rich enough

Blue Jays

Most of the birds have migrated by now, except for the odd flock of geese that are going over a mile high. That puts me back to the feeder for bird shots.

I have been inundated with Blue Jays. They seem to like my feeder (and food).

Now and again you see one having a "bad Hair Day"

They are not my favourite bird, but I enjoy the colours. They tend to be bullies.

There were actually seven present today. Word gets around!

Noon Hour Feeder

Caught him on take off! Finally

They were definitely hungry today at -21C (-3F)
 Tossing back peanuts like crazy!
Watching carefully and hoping for left overs.
 Waiting and enjoying some sun.

New Birds at the Feeder

This is the first time that I have seen European Starlings at the feeder. Actually, it is the first time that I have seen one period. I had to look them up!

They seemed to get along with the sparrows.

They actually are a very pretty bird, but I figured they would be long gone south.

A Blue, Blue Jay Morning

The last few days have been dreary, cold, damp and humid. Did I mention cloudy and cold? how about very foggy also?  Very hard to get motivated to get out and take pictures!

The hoar frost was heavy on the trees. I would have taken more tree shots except the sky was still very cloudy, with no contrast
Six blue jays showed up this morning at the feeder, and were very hungry. Aren't they always?
They pretty much stayed all fluffed up to keep the heat in.
See what I mean about no contrast?
I've heard and seen the old horse laugh. Here is the Blue Jay laugh.
Stay warm and think spring!

I Put the Snow Shovel Away Yesterday!

The grass was getting dry enough to rake. The stove on the deck was to be moved out today

The view from the car is depressing at least. Putting the shovels away obviously caused this change in the weather! However, the snow fits well with my philosophy of "Why do today, what you can put off until tomorrow!"

It's a good thing that there is a lot of heat now in the pavement. Driving for coffee and then to the Millar Center for a sauna and hot tub was still doable. Probably, the weather will change for tomorrow and I can get back to doing things outside.

I have to put the bird feeder up higher because nothing other than Brooklyn has eaten from it. She is a PIG!

Build It and They Will Come!

I finally got enough get up and go to build a temporary bird feeder. It is set up just outside the patio doors. It's only been up a few days, but has attracted lots of wildlife.

 The blue heron looked regal.
 Wood ducks were present
Even a Barrow's Golden Eye showed up!
The Canvasback seemed to like the view.

Seriously, this is just wish full thinking with some of the birds that I have carved over the years. We will have to wait and see what real stuff shows up. :-}
