Life On and Off an Acreage

In-sights into moving from an Acreage back to Town, plus a few things I find of interest.

Two things that horses are scared about:

1. Things that move
2. Things that don't move

The Joys of an Early Melt

This normally doesn't happen until March, but we got it, 2 days of +8C! This was our driveway this morning before I chewed it up with the quad and harrow, then sanded. Glare ice and slightly wet making it almost impossible to stand on. It also rained during the night. Rain in February! Only in Alberta! I chewed it up pretty good as we are under a snowfall warning tonight with another 15 to 20 cm forecast. I wanted some grooves to hold the snow and make it less slippery.

The only people happy are the chickens who really enjoyed the warm weather . They got outside to scratch for some of the food tossed into the run.
The pictures might be a little off the next few days as I dropped the camera and broke the view screen. So now it is really a "point and shoot" I hope the screen can be replaced.

  1. Your rooster with the white and orange and black mixed in is so handsome! What's his name (do you name your chickens? We do)?

  2. Oh crap (on the camera drop!) Love your chickens, though! You guys had a melt because you sent the cold weather and then snow down to us in Texas! At least for this week anyway...

  3. Cathy M. has left a new comment on your post "The Joys of an Early Melt":

Love the expression on your chicken's face. She looks indignant.

  4. Oh I see now how this is working, ya'll are warmer than you should be and you sent the extra cold, snow and ice to Texas... oh sure ... :O)

  7. Dropping the camera? Sounds like something I would do.

Stop by my blog, something is waiting for you there.....

  8. Funny, the weather you are having we are having it too! Snow is melting and now its raining and ice everywhere! Since we are in the mountains our land is pretty hilly. Makes for walking either down a slope or up a slope. We have corks on the boots to keep from falling.

Blessings on chewing up that ice.

  10. Eight degrees ...

We, too, are expecting a big snowfall tonight, and much more during the week. Sigh.

Sorry to hear about your camera - nothing worse than that.

Love the crazy shot of the chicken!!!

  11. That ice looks treacherous.

I broke my screen once. That was it for that camera. Hope you have a better brand that repairs such things.

  12. Brother Ian,

Now seeing as how I'm a ignorant city slicker let me ask a dumb question?

Is that second photo a turkey, a chicken, a rooster or a buzzard? What ever it is...it scared the heck out of me when I scrolled down!!

P.S. Please don't me I was looking in the mirror or you found a picture of one of my cousins!

BTW, The Red Green Show is becoming one of my favorite TV shows right behind Sanford and Son reruns :-)

Take care and have a great week.

    Brother Ron

  15. Brother Ian,
Wooowww!!! You've got such beautiful chickens. What are their names, dear??...
About the ice, please, be careful when you go outside. These streets might get too slippery in Winter time. I have fallen down several times. It is rather dangerous. Please, take good care of yourself and those you love, Ian.
I enjoy reading your posts. I follow your blog.
Thank you for reading my poems, Ian!!
God may bless all of you, Ian!!

  16. ALL:

We don't name our chickens or any other critter that could end up on the dinner table. The one exception is "Roo" and we have four of them.

The camera is thoroughly modern, and has a view screen only, no peep hole.

Ron, I wouldn't dare suggest such a thing! I know all about you Big City boys and their contracts.
