Life On and Off an Acreage

In-sights into moving from an Acreage back to Town, plus a few things I find of interest.

Two things that horses are scared about:

1. Things that move
2. Things that don't move

Winter Wonderland

Today, Sunday , I decided to take the dogs for a bit of a walk on the neighbour's land behind our place. The temperature was a nice -17C (0F). The snow was crisp and getting a little deep for easy walking, but still an enjoyable hour. It's almost time to dig out the old snowshoes.

Boots stayed with me, but Brooklynn turned left when we went right and never did catch up with us until we returned home. She was pretty iced up between the toes. It didn't seem to bother Boots at all.

I figured that there would be lots of critter sign after 3 days of snow flurries. Not so. It looks like the deer have finished the rut and moved down into the valley. I didn't even see a coyote track, which is unusual. It was just like a big, barren, white desert, without the heat.

All in all, not a bad way to spend a Sunday afternoon, or even part of one!

This field is a great one to ride in, before the neighbour puts his cows and bulls in. It goes way up, about 300feet, and is all open grassland. The cows keep it short, and this is a spot where you can let the horse go. Generally, they like to gallop from one end to the other, about a mile. In the winter, it is more of a slow walk, particularly in this area as there are obstacles under the snow.

  1. Wow! It's 30F here, and we think that's cold! I envy your snow though - we have freezing rain.
    It looks lovely up there!

  3. That's an amazing photo! I would have probably had snow shoes and a sled for someone to pull me in with all that snow! :P

  6. Pretty snow. Here in Texas we are still in the 70's, getting a new roof on and the wasps are stinging the roofers. Several folks have told me that we are expected to have a drought this winter with no moisture at all. I really count on the rain or occasional snow for my wildflowers. Stay warm! blessings,Kathleen

  8. Man! That's a lot of snow! We got 2.5 inches here yesterday and there are cars in ditches all over the county. We are notoriously bad winter drivers around here.

Great picture. Glad you didn't lose your dog in a drift!

  9. Beautiful photo. What a great way to spend part of the day. God is surely a gracious God to allow us to enjoy His creative handiwork. You enjoy it first hand and I have been permitted to enjoy it through the photo and your "commentary." Thank you for the opportunity of seeing and enjoying the beauty, variety, and design of our glorious God!
