Life On and Off an Acreage

In-sights into moving from an Acreage back to Town, plus a few things I find of interest.

Two things that horses are scared about:

1. Things that move
2. Things that don't move

It's Going to be a good day!

You just know that its going to be good when you wake up in the morning and the outside temperature is 0 C! A huge bonus happens when you go out to feed the critters and you see a large black lump on the driveway and find it to be a calf moose having a nap. The cow was about 15 feet away dutifully watching over. It was a little too dark for photos so I left them alone, hoping that they didn't meander up to the horse paddock. Also, hopefully they will have moved off before riding time today.

Yesterday it was also warm, about +2C so we saddled up two of the horses and went for about an hour and a half's ride in the fields back of our place. 360 degrees view from the top and about 25 miles in all directions. The two older horses were very well behaved, as they were together. The younger left at home one worked herself up pretty good as she too is herd bound.

I did groom her and walked her about a mile, then put a bridal on and barebacked her for another hour. Not so well behaved witha few unplanned bounds through the drifts on the side of the road. It felt pretty good at the time, but now I feel like I have been wish-boned. The horses aren't the only ones out of shape.

Decisions for today. Go for a ride? Trim 3 horses feet? Watch Olympics? Do flooring in the spare bedroom?
Too many choices, I'll probably have a nap! :0

  2. Oh how fun!!! A baby moose in your driveway! Fun fun fun fun!
We often just have two riders and the youngest, and most onry horse, Clover, gets left behind and we can hear him pitching a fit miles down the road. He hates being left behind!
I suppose you should take a nap....to many choices really zap the energy. HOpe you got in a good one!

  4. Sounds like a great day! I use to get up early before work and ride in the Modoc Mountains in the snow. It was great! Sounds cold though!

  7. I am actually afraid of horses :(... I think they are awesome animals but I like them on one side of the fence and me on the other while I feed them a carrot :O)...

But I bet its fun to ride if your not afraid :O) ...

  8. Julia: trail riding is easy here. Our back fence looks onto a section of grazing lease. Mostly open where you can let the horse go for about 3/4 of a mile. It is slowly rolling hills and nibbled down to the ground (almost) by cows. One km up the road is the entrance to about 50 square miles of mountain trails. You need a compass to get your way back.

Texan: We've got to get you over this fear. The horse is one of god's most magnificent animals.

City girl turned country girl: When you get to be my age, the short term memory is the first to go. Another day and I will forget the feeling of being wishboned, and will likely get back at it. I have to do some groundwork on the horse first as it's been a long winter and she is being very disrespectful!

Old Geezer: Ican't wait to give the US some hocky lessons. Ask the Swiss!

manker: Thanks! One of these days the light will be right. They will be around for another 3 to 4 weeks!

Libby: I need the Brownie Points, so started the floor. I keep remebering that one Gosh darn negates 10 atta boys. I may need the points down the road.
