Life On and Off an Acreage

In-sights into moving from an Acreage back to Town, plus a few things I find of interest.

Two things that horses are scared about:

1. Things that move
2. Things that don't move

Happy Spring Like Weather?

Just when it was starting to get nice and warm, we got another dump of snow, about 15 cm. We just had our street plowed and then the snow hit

I am running out of room to shovel it!
Daphnie was not bothered by the snow, and preferred to lie out in it

A Warmer, Sunny Day!

It was nice to get out again without a heavy coat, Toque, heavy gloves  and go walk-about with my faithful companion.

We have a lot of snow this year and its only mid February. The Mule deer are looking healthy in spite of the snow and cold.
They are even starting to get frisky while they enjoy the sunshine
I figured they would have been scared off as the town held a massive snow mobile rally over the weekend, with about 450 sleds all going past their holding area.

I was shocked!

Yesterday and today was clean up the garage day and put the snow blower away for the year. Elaine said it was way too early. We woke up to snow flakes today with about 2-3 cm forecast. I have been doing it by hand all year so that little amount is really nothing.

I also look forward to the spring seed catalogue coming in. I enjoy looking at all the exotics (Zone 7-8) that we can't plant. We are Zone 2-3.

Well, a seed catalogue did come in and it said "The time to plant is now"

On the Positive Side

Yesterday was our first snow day of fall. We had a lot of moisture come down, but fortunately it was half rain and half snow, and has now pretty much melted.

The Magpies were flitting around , much like normal

Its funny that every year after the first heavy frost or snow, the Robins descend and attack the Choke Cherry tree. I guess the cold sweetens and/or softens them.

Here is one trying to reach a clump of berries. Too dull a day to get a fast shutter speed!

On the positive side, the snow didn't stay!

Not Ready!

September 19 was a cold and miserable day with SNOW! Fortunately by the end of the day it had mostly melted. However the monsoon rain continued and continued. The good thing is you don't have to shovel rain.

It was kind of pretty, and something that I have missed for 6 months....NOT!

I did put the winter bird feeder up and it wasn't more than 15 minutes before the Blue Jays found it, followed by the Magpies and then these critters. This is the first year that we have had crows feeding

All in all, not too bad a thing to have around, I guess.

Enough, Already!

Here we are , March 7 and we have more snow than ever! 8 inches over the last few days, and 4 more days forecast. Daphne is the only one that doesn't seem to mind the -15C and the snow.

What Happened?

It seems the snow was almost gone. The fields were brown. Some grass was starting to go green. Then this! Snow for 3 days!

The geese were wandering about also questioning reality!

However, the goofus dogs thought it was great!

Daphne and Brooklyn really enjoyed an outing in the snow (nasty 4 letter word)!

Anyway. Happy Easter to all of you!

It Was A nice Spring Day!

The day started good with a trip to the dog park with Daphne for  a walk and a play with her Kong on a rope. She is an excellent retriever and brings it right back to hand.

I didn't get pictures, but she is also showing promise as a swimmer in the Rotary Park pond.
The weather was excellent with a high of +25C   (77F) for most of the day. By 10:00 pm this happened! Only in Alberta, eh!

Our Yard

It's big enough for some fruit trees and a garden plus a rhubarb patch. However, it is simply not deep enough for all the snow!
It's not even mid February yet and we have lots more to come
Some of our biggest dumps are in March. I may have to build the 6 foot fence higher!
The two goofy dogs don't seem to mind, but they are both escape artists just waiting for the snow to get to the top of the fence.
As long as there is still room to play, they are happy.
 Very happy!

Cold, Cold Day!

We woke up to -20C (-4F) this morning, plus more snow.
There was snow on the roof
The Sparrows were all fluffed up and at the feeder.

The Blue Jay drove them all off until he had his fill.

So long for now!

Welcome to Winter

Normally, we have had snow long before this! About 4 inches came down and the forecast says "Snow for the next two days". Guess it's probably here to say.

Some of the feathered friends had to dig deep for breakfast.
No, it's not a ring billed Magpie!

My feelings are expressed here. Ba Humbug!

Blue Monday Wasn't All Bad!

The two grandkids (and mother)were very excited to see the snow. The Texas licence plate out front looked a little miserable,
However, the kids had a great morning building two snow men.
They got wet, and cold, and had a lot of fun!
Today, the snowmen are mostly melted and everyone said"Amen"!
